Item description from seller

1824. First edition. viii, 148pp. The author of this hard-to-find book treated ophthalmia in England, Ireland, France Sapin, America, and the West Indies. He pursued the antiphlogistic plan of treatment for twelve years but was frequently disappointed with the result and develkoped the opinion that ophthalmia was aggravated by low diet, total abstinence from wine, depletion, and confinement to bed.He developed his own treatment with the greatest part of his information drawn from observation in the 64th Regiment; a corps with which he served in different climates from the year 1813. The case of the book is in need of repair. The original paper covered boards are worn and detached with bumping and damage to the corners. The last leaf of the book (pages 147 and 148) is still attached to the rear board. It was bound with a cloth spine, most of which is missing from the spine. The endpaper on the front board has a stamp from the Glasgow Eye Infirmary Library. Apart from this stamp there are no library indications. The contents are in better condition being largely clean with only a little scattered foxing and some light soiling from finger smudges on the title page. The front free endpaper and title page are loose and, as mentioned above, the last page of the book is separated from the rest of the text and is attached to the rear board. Some of the pages remain unseparated along the top edge.
