About this Item
Illustrated. 225 pages. Scarce true first edition of Travis' Practical Golf. Another of golf's multi-dimensional men, Travis was a player, author, editor, and course designer. He won consecutive US Amateur Championships in 1900 and 1901, the year of publication. He repeated in 1903 but his career highpoint was in 1904 when he became the first foreign golfer to win the Amateur Championship of Great Britain, then regarded as golf's highest prize. While the majority of the book is instructional, it contains two of the earliest chapters on US golf architecture, "The Construction and Upkeep of Courses," and "Putting Greens." Also, chapters on Caddies; Clubs; Club Shafts and Balls; Etiquette, Rules, Glossary of Technical Terms, Index, and Rules Index. This copy in beautiful collector condition with no external flaws, no internal markings, and several uncut pages. Clean bright copy; extremely uncommon in this condition. Covers protected in mylar.
