About this Item
Green cloth. 12mo. 57pp plus 6pp ads. Illustrated. A treatise on the author's method of flash light portraiture illustrated with a number of his sample portraits. Fitz W. Guerin (1846-1903) was born in New York City but headed west at age 13. He fought in the Civil War where he developed an interest in the new art of photography. After the war he worked as camera man and retoucher in the galleries of three established St. Louis photographers. In 1876 he opened his own studio and after winning a prize for his photography at the World Exposition in Paris his reputation enabled him to secure sitings with stage performers and other celebrities but he also prepared various genre scenes for sale to the public in his studio. Guerin was the most accomplished practitioner of flash light photography in the Midwest during the 1890s and opened his own school of photography in St. Louis in 1900. This book is illustrated with many of his sample genre scenes. A very good copy with some light wear to the spine tips and corners. The text is very good with some light wear. Scarce.
