Nathaniel Ponder is imprisoned in Northampton Gaol for preaching his Puritan beliefs, leaving his motherless children, John, Beth and Charley to fend for themselves. It is to be a tough year. Bailiff Foggarty longs to evict the family if they do not pay their rent, but the children are determined to survive. They go to work - John as a farm labourer, Beth as a servant in the Manor House and even little Charley spends his days in the fields as a bird-scarer!
