Item description from seller

Hardback. Underlining and ticks to margin in pencil to some pages. Message to previous owner to inside cover. Very slight shelf wear to D/J. Slight foxing to edge. The author reports what social scientists and historians actually do, rather than what their methodological manuals urge them to do. He sorts out the scientific from the political content in a wide range of old and new work, in historu, sociology, political science and economics. He finds that values are integral in much of the work, from the most practical research to the purest theory, and are vitally helpful to its choices of methods, identity, class and explanation; researches who attempt 'value-freedom' do not merely trade good politics for bad, but also damage their technical equipment and discover less. 453 pp.
