Stout 12mo. Pp. xviii, 9 - 415. Preface by May Wentworth (pen name of Mary Richardson Newman Dolliver). AEG. Brown buckram with gilt lettering on spine. Edgewear to head and tail of spine; corners worn; foxing to a few pages. In all, binding is sturdy and condition is desirable, with handsome shelf appeal. Franklin Walker states that this was produced in reaction to the first California anthology, and was designed to snub Brett Harte, that anthology's uncredited and biased editor, who was willfully omitted here. Cowan II, p. 675: "this and 'Outcroppings' are the earliest Californian anthologies." An early Pacific Coast anthology, featuring the ownership signature of J. R. Weller -- Joseph R. Weller was an early Bay area pioneer, settling in Santa Clara County where he co-founded the town of Milpitas. Features poems by editor May Wentworth, Ina Coolbrith, John Ridge, Edward Pollock, Lyman Goodman, Ralph Keeler, et al. Bookseller inventory A03095L.
