About this Item
1900. First edition thus. xvii, 457pp. Top edge gilt. Mathilde Blind (1841-1896) was a German-born English poet, fiction writer, biographer, essayist and critic. Her best known work, included in this volume, is probably The Ascent of Man, in which she presents a distinctly feminist response to the Darwinian theory of evolution. This edition of her poetical works has been edited by Arthur Symons with a memoir by Richard Garnett. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold emblem bearing the initials BM on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and bumping to the bottom corners and spine ends. The contents are tight and clean but unfortunately a previous owner has cut away the bottom 2 3/4" of pages 21/22 and top 3" of pages 23/24 (parts of the memoir). There is a hand-drawn book label on the front free endpaper but no inscription. Seller Inventory # gPoetBlind01
