Add to basketFirst edition. Light green floral patterned cloth. 229 pp. The first book by American author Elizabeth Fries Ellet, containing her poem Teresa Contarini. Ellet is perhaps best known for her three volume work, "The Women of the American Revolution," being the first book to focus on women and their role in the shaping of the United States, although she did ignore contributions by African American women. Ellet was also involved in a scandal with Edgar Allan Poe, in which she and another writer had allegedly sent Poe flirtatious letters. Perhaps jealous of Frances Sargent Osgood (the other letter writing woman), Ellet apparently fomented a scandal by somewhat publicly outing Osgood and Poe. Not mentioned by Ellet was the fact that she had also written letters. Scandalous!! GOOD condition. Uneven fading, soiling, spotting and discoloration to the covers, especially the reverse. Minor staining. Spine tips a bit pulled and frayed. Cloth worn along the extremities. Previous owner's signature on the first endpaper. Large dampstain affecting the lower half of the pages throughout. Some scattered foxing and soiling.
