Add to basketOctavo, 282pp. Leaves measure about 7 7/8" x 5 1/8." Presumed first edition. Bound in the publisher's pale blue boards with white spine. Notable wear to board extremities, and some concentrated gouges to the front board, else clean and sound internally; overall about very good. Two handsome bookplates to front endpapers, including that of noted art dealer Samuel Putnam Avery. Housed in a navy cloth slipcase, backed in dark leather, with a navy cloth chemise. A notation on a rear blank from Eugene Field II indicates that this is one of the books from his father's library, one of the most storied libraries of its era. A rather difficult first edition to identify, having been issued in a few different bindings and trim sizes. Physically, our copy seems to conform mostly to the description on p. 132 of volume IV of "The Ashley Library." This is a listing for one of apparently twelve copies whose collation matches exactly that of the "large paper" copies, issued in an edition of 25, but without that edition statement on the verso of the half-title, and with a trim size about an inch shorter than the large paper copies. In Wise's copy (and, according to him, in the other 11 copies), the endpapers have a "design in bright orange," though ours are plain. Wise also states that these were intended for presentation, but ours bears no presentation inscription. Thus we are a bit stumped, as it's clearly not one of the "large paper" copies, and it doesn't perfectly conform to the reserved presentation issue. While cataloguers sometimes optimistically describe such head-scratchers as "trial copies," which this very might well be, it seems more likely that it's one of a small and undetermined number of "overs" bound up by the publisher and likely sold. It is worth noting that that Samuel Putnam Avery is known to have purchased a number of prints from Rossetti's own collection, and it's certainly possible that he might have obtained this book from Rossetti's own library, which could point to it being one of Rossetti's own author copies. But to continue to speculate in this vein is to court disappointment. At any rate, an interesting copy of Rossetti's only major work of poetry, with distinguished provenance. (See Wise, Ashley IV, p. 132.).
