The first Chiswick edition of this collection of poems and letters by noted English author Thomas Gray. Includes poems such as 'Ode on the Spring,' 'Hymn to Adversity,' 'Epitaph on Sir William Williams,' and many more, as well as forty-five letters exchanged with various personalities, such as Walpole, Wharton, West, &c. With the half title page and the extra 'Eton Prize book' leaf bound-in as common. Illustrated with a frontispiece and three oval albumen photographic prints. Collated, complete. xvi, 415 [1]pp. Provenance: two names to the prize page, Alexandre M Hilton and Edward Balston. Approximately 11 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles to a maroon chipped title label, worn and rubbed, heavily gilt decorated to the compartments. Joints fair condition split through to the front joint, rubbed and worn to the rear. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition full polished calf, with gilt decoration to the board edges, some marks and scratches. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, all gilt. See above and photos. Internally Hinges poor to good condition cracked to the front, strong to the rear. Paste downs good condition marbled. End papers good condition marbled, tanned subsequently.
