Spruce green full cloth boards, gilt cover and spine design with ornate decorative design, moderate shelf, corner wear, rub. Cover and spine with similar motif of bright red floral decoration among green leaved vines and petal dentelle. Scarce cover design for this collection and publisher. Stylish antiquarian pencilled inscription at front endpaper: "To A. B. Harrell, From Sister Mabel, Christmas 1902." Classic pictorial bookplate at front pastedown at front pastedown; also for Albert B. Harrell. Intriguing plate depicts young boy reading among candle light with book shelves and shining city on hill in b.g. with violin at his side. Framed within classical Greek columns with header and words "faith" and "hope" at base of columns. Pages generally very good with varying toning; few with moderate discoloration. Circa late nineteenth century news clipping of 3" x 5" portrait of Poe set in at back. Also, intriguing article of similar vintage from southern newspaper with details of poem of Poe's recently discovered and entitled "Serenade" with piece below article of same clipping. Bind good, square; hinges intact.
