Add to basketIllustrated. Unpaginated (28 pages). There is no publisher, printer, author or date on this flip or flicker book. "Playing the Woods" is centered on the cover with "Hold Here" near the binding staple, and "Flip Pages Here" at the opposite side, the only printed words on this booklet, the rear cover is blank. I believe this flicker book is recorded in the Donovan and Jerris' golf bibliography (see D&J #P15400) as depicting Willie MacFarlane, with a date of circa 1930. Both statements are incorrect. This flicker book was published by Reporter Publications, New York in 1952, depicts Mike Weiss swing the wood, and was issued in conjunction with Gentry Magazine Number 3 Summer 1952 issue. Page 70 of this magazine has a six-page article by Mike Weiss entitled "Golf Without Fears" divided into three parts: The Woods, The Irons, and The Putt. Mike Weiss demonstrates the wood (and the iron) in sequential photographs. It is immediately apparent comparing the photographs in the magazine with those in the flicker book that Mike Weiss is the subject of both. On the third page of the article below Weiss setting up to swing with the wood is a blank outline with "TIP BOOKLET HERE" printed in the center. "Gentry" was an upscale magazine at $2.00 per copy. Accompanying different articles, this issue had eleven tipped in plates, five tipped in pieces of fabric, and an actual barbed fishing fly was also tipped in. Apparently, the printer never glued in the flicker booklet, although they were supposed to. All copies were issued with the flicker booklet laid in at the appropriate page, but not tipped in as it was supposed to be. There is an elderly gentleman pictured in the putt sequence in the article and he may be Willie MacFarlane. One tiny spot of oxidation at one end of the binding staple, else covers unmarked, contents also clean without ceases or tears. Covers protected in mylar. Size: Oblong 64mo - up to 3" Tall.
