The first edition of an illustrated guide through the historic counties of Staffordshire and Shropshire, showcasing the talent of Irish artist Frederick Calvert. The first edition of Picturesque Views, and Descriptions of Cities, Towns, Castles, Mansions, and other Objects of Interesting Features in Staffordshire & Shropshire, written by William West, with illustrations by Irish artist Frederick Calvert. Complete in two volumes bound in one, with I focusing on Staffordshire and Shropshire, and II focusing on Shropshire. In half contemporary green morocco, with blue marble boards and raised bands. End papers renewed. Contains a frontispiece, title vignette and all thirty-seven other plates to I and all thirty-one other plates to II, engraved by Thomas Radclyffe. Collated complete. A beautiful tour of scenes one would find in the historic counties of Staffordshire and Shropshire, including Ludlow Castle, Wenlock Abbey, and Armitage Park, with historical descriptions on each. Collaborating with Radclyffe, the owner of a major copper plate engraving firm based in Birmingham, Calvert proves that he can illustrate idyllic scenes as well as the naval battles for which he was better known for. In half contemporary green morocco, with blue marble boards and raised bands. End papers renewed. Externally, fading patches and scratches to marble boards. Rubbing to joints and edges, with rubbing marks to spine, a little heavier to top raised band. Bumping to the extremities, with minor loss to morocco. Renewed end papers are mostly bright and clean, with small tidemarks to hinges and signs of glue residue for support. Internally, firmly bound. Signs of repair to right edge of Haughmond Abbey plate to II. Pages are generally bright and clean with slight age toning and the odd spot. Good. …
