Beautifully decorated book with stamped design in gold and black along with pictorial paste-down on front cover illustrating a bird with a feather writing quill in its' beak having just spilled a bottle of ink. There is gold tooling on the cover and spine. very exquisite binding. Pages are misnumbered starting at 238-294 then 5-62, then 179-237, then 412-468, then 527-585. All the stories seem to be in a logical order. For the most part they are one-page stories followed by a page illustrating the story. (There are approximately 282 pages) This little book is complete, clean, and tight. It contains very early childrens stories with the most wonderful illustrations, some of the stories include The Dunce-Block (Ragged Dick), Rogers Refusal (Father whips his boy for refusing to buy him alcohol), The Hospitable Croquet Player, The House That Jack Built, Sam's Guest (Big Black Sam), Lazy Sambo (South Carolina), The Three Bad Boys, The Old Officer, Gretchen's Little Lamb, The Temperence Meeting, The Two Gypsies, The Soldiers Monument, Onota and Her Dead Papoose, and many more. The pictures are almost as wonderful as the stories themselves as they depict period furniture, scenes, houses, toys, etc. Especially rare in this wonderful condition. (Contains some exagerated stereotypes).…
