VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book. "The Pictorial History of England - Volume IV" By George L. Craik and Charles Macfarlane. This book is believed to be the First Edition, published by Charles Knight & Co., London, 1841. Thick & heavy book. PLEASE NOTE: As this book is heavy (over 2 Kg with packaging), if you are buying this from outside the U.K. please expect additional shipping costs. 4to, 27.6 cm x 18 cm x 7.2 cm, Brown cloth-covered boards, Spine is very age tanned & discoloured so cannot tell original cloth colour, clear embossed horizontal bars & gilt embossed lettering on spine, Yellow end papers, Some rough-cut, and unevenly cut pages, sorry no dust-jacket. Weight: Approx. 2 Kg. (2000 Grams). 856 pages. CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! However, binding is a little slack: there are several cracks between pages throughout the book, including in between pastedowns & end papers at front & rear of book, some pages are creased alongside spine, on some the stiching holes are enlarged. Spine is very worn with splits in cloth either end & alongside covers, cloth rippled & creased in places, some marks, bumped & frayed either end with some loss of cloth there, gilt a bit dull. Cover is very worn, marked, scuffed, discoloured & faded, some scratches & bumps, edge wear. Corners are bumped and frayed, boards exposed & worn away there. Outer edges scratched, top edge marked & faded. End papers & pastedowns slightly marked & creased front & rear of book. Small sticker on front pastedown. Most pages are slightly rippled, a few pairs of pages are still attached together at top edge. Some pages have corner folds/creases, and/or edge bumps/nicks, and/or light smudges/marks mostly in margins, and/or creasing/small tears on edges. Light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout.
