1/3000. Octavo. (6) 38pp. Original tan stapled wraps with red lettering on cover. The national phonetic symbols and word-forms interpreted by mimetic and illustrative cuts. Phonetic Committee Number 22. Contains two prefaces, one to explain the phonetic alphabet, the other the picture phonetic dictionary. The phonetic alphabet contains thirty-nine single symbols, according to the Ministry of Education, April 1919. In addition twenty-two double-symbol characters are added following the Chinese "fan ch'ieh" or blending method used in all native dictionaries indicating the sound of the character. The picture phonetic dictionary contains the thirty-nine symbols of the phonetic alphabet and four hundred commonly used combinations. Further detailed instruction in both prefaces facilitate the efficient use of the dictionary. The pictorial part of the dictionary features the Chinese letters next to explanatory drawings, including some drawings intended to help further the pronunciation of the Chinese symbols. Text in English and Chinese. Wraps with some wear along edges, small chips and closed tears along bottom edge near spine. Wraps detached from block and reinforced with small transparent tap along spine and lightly sunned. Block with light sunning along edges. Wraps in overall fair, interior in good+ condition.
