About this Item
12mo, pp [2], viii, 238, without half title, bound in contemporary unlettered calf, numbered '2', rubbed but sound, one small corner tear with looss of a couple of letters only else in good clean state, FIRST EDITION, this spurious continuation of Lyttelton's 'Letters of a Persian' of the same year has attracted a certain amount of critical attention over the years, interest perhaps more than in Lyttelton's famous work of political patriotism, itself an imitation of Montesquieu. This anonymous 'continuation' is in the form of a complete oriental novel that commences with the third letter entitled 'The History of Hymempsal, King of Numidia' .a work this has been avowedly sent from England to Persia to entertain women of the harem. 'The work was swiftly published in a new edition the following year under a new title 'Celenia; or the History of Hyempsal'.ascribed to 'Zelis the Persian.' . It is, in fact, a political satire disguised as romance and of considreable interest in the context of orientalism in the early English novel. Seller Inventory # 29660
