Add to basketHoward Henry Toothâ sÂThe Peroneal Type of Progressive Muscular AtrophyÂ(1886) is a landmark neurological monograph and his Cambridge M.D. thesis, presenting the first systematic English-language description of the hereditary neuropathy later known as Charcotâ "Marieâ "Tooth disease. Tooth identified a distinct form of progressive muscular atrophy characterized by degeneration beginning in the peroneal muscles of the lower extremities and advancing proximally. His careful clinical documentation, analysis of familial inheritance patterns, and differentiation of this condition from other forms of muscular atrophy helped establish the disease as a distinct neurological entity. Working within the emerging field of modern neurology alongside contemporaries such as Charcot and Marie, Toothâ s research helped define hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies and contributed significantly to understanding neurodegenerative disease mechanisms. This work represents a foundational contribution to neurological science and remains an essential historical document in the development of modern clinical neurology. Condition & Binding:ÂBound in contemporary cloth boards, likely original or early binding, with manuscript titling to upper cover (â Progressive Muscular Atrophy â " H. Toothâ ). Binding structurally present but with significant inner hinge wear and splitting at the gutter, with visible reinforcement and aging to inner joints. Text block complete and generally clean, with moderate age toning and scattered foxing typical of the period. Ownership signature of Dr. Harry M. Salzer, dated 1936, present on front free endpaper. Overall- fair to good.
