Frontispiece, xv, 368 pp; 7 tables; 139 illus.; 22 photographs. Original cloth. Very Good, without dust jacket. 'I very warmly recommend J. W. van Spronsen's book to every chemist -not only to the chemist who is interested in the history' (E. Rancke-Madsen, 'The Periodic System of Chemical Elements. An Essay Review', Centaurus, Vol. 18 Issue 1, pp. 76-80). 'The classic predecessor of [Eric R. Scerri's] The Periodic Table is J. W. van Spronsen's 1969 book The Periodic System of Chemical Elements: A History of the First Hundred Years. The material covered is quite similar, but van Spronsen's account, much more iterative than Scerri's, provides more examples of the great diversity of periodic systems that have been constructed, particularly in the 20th century' (Seymour Mauskopf, 'Elemental Deductions', review of Scerri, The Periodic Table: Its Story and Its Significance for American Scientist, Sept.-Oct. 2007).
