An undated, probable first Everyman's Library edition (1908) of a pair of short works of fiction by Charles Reade (1814-1884), perhaps best known for his "The Cloister and the Hearth." Both stories have been described as comedies of manners. Everyman's Library #299, an entry in EL's "Fiction" series, edited by Ernest Rhys, who has supplied a brief introduction. --- In 'flatback' binding style 1, full ribbed red cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, brown topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- A Good-only copy with somewhat shaken binding, soiling to cover and a few tears to cloth at mid-spine.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; ix, [5], 330 pages.
