About this Item
First edition. 8vo. Original cloth, dust-jacket. Very bright boards, no inscriptions in an unrestored pictorial jacket with minor chipping to spine ends. Priced incongruously at 6'9 on spine. Pseudonym of UK author John Keble Bell. The Peculiar Major hovers between fantasy and sf, as its subtitle - An Almost Incredible Story - hints as well as being relevant to the WW1 fiction genre. The story concerns an ancient ring which allows a British army officer to make himself invisible and so perform heroic exploits in WW1. It was clearly influenced by the HG Wells classic The Invisible Man underscored by the fact that the book's preface contains a short letter from HG Wells wishing the author good luck with the publication. The UK edition is the true first as it was published before the more common US equivalent. Rare and desirable in jacket. Seller Inventory # 82488
