Item description from seller

The first edition of this collection of essays on the Church of England and puritanism. The first edition in book form. The essay originally appeared in 'The Cornhill Magazine'.In the publisher's original cloth. This volume features essays written by Matthew Arnold, an English poet and critic. The essays discuss and critique Protestants, Puritans and the Church of England. Arnold was known for his controversial religious opinions, critiquing the bible and religion, which was rare for the time. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally very smart with very slight rubbing to the extremities and joints, and very small tears to the head of the spine. Hinges weak with a bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Internally binding tender in places. Pages age toned and generally clean with only the odd spot. Very Good.
