Add to basketFirst British edition. This is quite scarce compared to the first American edition. First published under the title Paradisarheimt in 1960. Translated by Magnus Magnusson; translation copyright by Methuen in 1962. Black cloth-covered boards, gilt spine lettering (bright), red spine decorations, 8 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches, 253 pp. Book very good (modest spine slant; mild dust soiling, top edge of book block). Dustcover VG- (moderate edge wear; modest sunning, spine; focal lifting/bubbling of overlying clear laminate, mild overall; not price-clipped). Laxness won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955. "Steinar of Steinahlidar was a simple man: a careful, conscientious farmer, a man of integrity who loved his family dearly and wanted above all else to create an earthly paradise for his two young children. And yet, the more he tried to protect them from the harsh reality of the world, the more suffering he brought upon them. First, to gain royal favour, he gave away their fairy-tale white pony to the Danish king. Later, his search for paradise took him from his farm in nineteenth-century Iceland to Denmark and then to the Mormon state of Utah. The account of Steinar's adventures, and the ordeals suffered by his family, abandoned to the mercy of an unscrupulous neighbour, makes Paradise Reclaimed a moving and exciting story --- a rich blend of satire and compasson, of laughter and sorrow, of poetry and wisdom, told by a novelist of great power and perception."
