The second edition of the first systematic treatise on the history and criticism of painting in English : it is also important for containing the first English translation of eleven of Vasari's Lives, viz. those of Cimabue, Giotto, Leonardo, Andrea del Sarto, Raphael, Giorgione, Michel Angelo, Giulio Romano, Perino del Vaga, Titian and Donatello. T. Borenius published a long discussion of this work in The Burlington Magazine XXXIX (1921), pp. 188-195, 'An early English Writer on Art,' in which Borenius says: 'In all the years that I have tried to be on the lookout for early books on art, this is the only copy I have come across. the second edition seems still more uncommon than the first." With the preliminary Imprimatur leaf,supplied in facsimile but also with the original leaf containing the further Imprimatur statement, and errata and an advertisement on the recto of the salutation to the dedicatee, indicating that this is indeed the second edition of 1686 ("A reissue, with cancel title page and errata, etc., printed on chi1r (originally blank), of the 1685 edition"- ESTC R27095), Our copy has numerous differences in the errors of pagination recorded in ESTC R27095. Provenance: 1687 priced acquisition note on front pastedown endpaper with later pencil name below. One other early manuscript note. Rebacked with parts of the original spine laid down and corners repaired, later leather spine-label. Lacking the second edition's title-page, title-page (of first edition) in red and black and short preliminary Imprimatur leaf both supplied in facsimile, professional edge-repairs to two leaves after title-page, final text leaf, and two others, some minor edge-loss elsewhere. A few minor marks and occasional minor spotting, occasional darkening to page edges, but generally a good clean copy internally. Seller Inventory # ABE-50414
