About this Item
First thus - a first impression of the pocket edition published by William Heinemann. The book was first published in the UK by Martin Secker earlier in the same year, and in the USA by Thomas Seltzer in 1921. ***Very good in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine. The boards are generally clean, but there is a strip of darkening at the fore-edge of the front board, and the spine is slightly faded. No bumps or creases apart from a slight crease to the top edge of the front board, and slight creasing to the bottom corner tips. Page block edges clean - just slightly darkened. No tears to the fragile cloth and no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with a couple of names in ink to the front free endpaper. The interior pages are clean, with none of the usual foxing. The book is printed on very thick paper - almost like thin card. Slight creasing to the lower corner tips of the first few pages, otherwise no creases or tears. No dustwrapper. ***128 pages. 178mm x 120mm. ***Contents: I. Psychoanalysis vs. Morality; II. The Incest Motive and Idealism; III. The Birth of Consciousness; IV. The Child and His Mother; V. The Lover and the Beloved; VI. Human Relations and the Unconscious. ***'David Herbert Lawrence (11 Sep 1885 - 2 Mar 1930) was an English novelist, short story writer, poet and essayist. His modernist works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization, while championing sexuality, vitality and instinct. Several of his novels, "Sons and Lovers", "The Rainbow", "Women in Love", and "Lady Chatterley's Lover", were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of sexuality and use of explicit language. Lawrence's opinions and artistic preferences earned him a controversial reputation; he endured contemporary persecution and public misrepresentation of his creative work throughout his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile that he described as a "savage enough pilgrimage". At the time of his death, he had been variously scorned as tasteless, avant-garde, and a pornographer who had only garnered success for erotica; however, English novelist and critic E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation". Later, English literary critic F. R. Leavis also championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness.' (Wiki) ***A very good copy of the first impression of the pocket edition, published by William Heinemann in the same year as the Martin Secker true first edition. Uncommon. ***Of interest to collectors of the work of D. H. Lawrence and works concerning Freud and Psychoanalysis. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
