12mo. (18 cm) 318[2]p. Illustrated throughout with thumbnail black and white photos of the persons profiled in this book. Green cloth over slightly flexible boards with black letters and decorations on the front cover. All edges red. Some wear to extremities with nothing worn through, top and bottom of spine just barely beginning to fray, corners lightly bumped, foredge of last page slightly wrinkled and chipped, several previous owners' names in pencil and ink and one stamped on the title page [Eva Bybee], else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Other names listled on the front pastedown include the following: Water Campbell, Hazelnon [?] Campbell, Eva Campbell, Carol Campbell, and Murile [?] Campbell. Inscription reads as follows: "This book wass given to Eva C. Bybee by her Mother Mary Blanche Raleight Campbell who was b. 27 Jan. 1857 passed away." (sic) Another inscription reads as follows: Give to Mother and we children by the Bishop of the Riverdale Ward." Eva C. Bybee's signature appears twice on the title page. On the obverse of the title page is the following inscription in the same hand as previous inscriptions: "This book given to Launa Hymas Noll by Amy Bybee Hymas, daughter of Eva Campbell Bybee Dec 1990." Matthias F. Cowley [1858-1940] was a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles; in 1905 he resigned this position and his priesthood was suspended because he continued to support polygamy. The publisher, Ben E. Rich, was in charge of the Southern States Mission at the time of this publication; some of these biographies originally appeared in his newspaper, Latter-day Saints Southern Star. There is another edition of this work the same year and publisher to which is appended Matthias?s Talks on Doctrine (505 pp. total). We haven?t been able to determine which is the actual first, but since Talks on Doctrine was also published separately in 1902, we assume that what we have is the actual first. This book is not listed in Chad Flake?s A Mormon Bibliography, 1830-1930). This is a rare work on Mormonism.
