1st Printing. 282 pages. Published in 2022. New And Definitive Translation of the author's ground-breaking novel. Miguel Angel Asturias' masterpiece. The First Penguin Classics Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Penguin Classics Edition is now scarce. The book remains available in multiple subsequent printings. Presents, in its First Edition format, Miguel Angel Asturias' "El Senor Presidente" in a felicitous English translation by David Unger. Foreword by Mario Vargas Llosa, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century and our time. Introduction by Gerald Martin. At long last: The single most famous "dictator novel" in Latin-American history, and the first major novel in Latin America to attempt a revolution in literary language. It is fundamentally a novel about what we now (almost casually) label as toxic masculinity, in its most extreme and absurd form. In the way it emasculates all other men, abuses all women, and destroys a whole nation (which Guatemala has yet to recover from), the psychopathology of the Latino "macho man" dictator is unprecedented and insuperable. Yet Miguel Angel Asturias' permanent contribution to world literature is to depict the destructive insanity of machismo through daring literary innovation and outstanding Modernism instead of conventional realism. "I was stunned when I first read it at the age of nineteen, three months after I had read James Joyce's 'Ulysses'. Without Asturias, the so-called 'magical realist' perspective and techniques of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' would not have existed" (Gerald Martin). "It is the kind of performance that strains at the limits of a novelist's craft and is seldom repeated in a writer's career, except by genius" (The New York Times). An absolute "must-have" title for Miguel Angel Asturias collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Edition Thus/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: ALL other copies available online are in multiple subsequent printings or have serious flaws ("Good", "Very Good"). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize For Literature in 1967. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. “A formidable new English translation.” ?The New Yorker
“[A] masterful translation.” ?The Washington Post
Nobel Prize–winning Guatemalan author Miguel Ángel Asturias’s masterpiece—the original Latin American dictator novel and pioneering work of magical realism—in its first new English translation in more than half a century, featuring a foreword by Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa
Also available from Penguin Classics: Miguel Ángel Asturias’s visionary epic of ecological devastation, capitalist exploitation, and Indigenous wisdom, Men of Maize
In an unnamed country, an egomaniacal dictator schemes to dispose of a political adversary and maintain his grip on power. As tyranny takes hold, everyone is forced to choose between compromise and death. Inspired by life under the regime of President Manuel Estrada Cabrera of Guatemala, where it was banned for many years, and infused with exuberant lyricism, Mayan symbolism, and Guatemalan vernacular, Nobel Prize winner Miguel Ángel Asturias’s magnum opus is at once a surrealist masterpiece, a blade-sharp satire of totalitarianism, and a gripping portrait of psychological terror.
For more than seventy-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 2,000 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
