Original gray cloth with paper title labels to spine and front cover; xi, [1], 178 pp., color frontispiece and 15 full-page illustrations by the author. Slight fading to covers, else fine in price-clipped pictorial dustjacket with closed tear to rear panel at bottom of spine. A true account of life in the poorhouse with no literary or poetic aspirations whatsover, judging by Theodore Dreiser's strangely ambivalent introduction. Dreiser says: ". . . the author does somehow infuse into this narrative the glow of reality - the strangeness of a world one has never penetrated, yet which can no longer be wholly strange once one has read this. Art? No. A great book? No. Yet a very exceptional one.". Seller Inventory # 21289
