It was the time of his constant discussions with F. P. Ramsey, and the time when so many, in Britain and in Vienna, were influenced by what they gathered of his teaching. If it is hardly like the Investigations, it is hardly like the Tractatus either. But it does show why and in what way he had to give up ideas that were fundamental there. And the steps he takes often point towards the methods of the Investigations~although there were radical changes to come before that. Two central themes exist: first, the view of generality, distinguishing between the generality of 'general propositions', and generality in mathematics (the generality of the variable); rejecting 'apparent variables', and also 'the extensional view'. Secondly, logical analysis, elementary propositions, syntax. The connection of language and reality. There is a different view of the relation of logic to mathematics, and of its relation to 'possible syntax' altogether. It grows from the discussion of many other questions: the distinction of 'senseless' and 'meaningful'. The 'certainty' of mathematics. Equations and significant propositions. 'All numbers'~'infinity'. Proving that p is provable. What is a mathematical question? Irrationals and infinite decimal fractions. Negation in arithmetic; the law of excluded middle. Visual space and euclidean space. Hypotheses; probability. The late Dr Waismann's literary executors generously permitted the inclusion of selections from his shorthand notes of Wittgenstein's discussions with him and Schlick at this period. As far as practicable, the pagination of the English edition follows that of the German (Oxford, Blackwell, and Frankfurt, Suhrkamp, 1964). Rush Rhees, the editor of this volume, was a pupil of Wittgenstein's and is one of his literary executors. He has edited several of Wittgenstein's posthumously published works and is the author of Discussions of Wittgenstein (1970). Raymond Hargreaves is a lecturer in German and Roger White in philosophy at the University of Leeds.…
