Bright red cloth with blindstamped decoration to spine and front board, gilt lettering on spine, black lettering and pasted on colour illustration on front board. Pictorial front endpapers, 8 colour plates (including tissue-covered frontispiece), 8 b&w photographs, map, drawing showing "Bird's-eye View of the Panama Canal, Showing Nearness of British Possessions" (all present). Slight separation between some page gatherings but pages are still firm in binding; page leaf 73/74 has several very small chips/tears (archivally taped), wrinkling and corner crease at bottom edge - adjacent pages have some imprint of the wrinkling/crease; light toning to free rear endpaper; light browning and tiny foxing marks on edges of text block - some darkening to top of text block; tiny dent on bottom edge of front board, three very tiny scuffs and a very small piece of paper glued to edge of pastedown colour picture on front board, tiny light stain on front edge of spine. Dust jacket has edge chips and tears - some with creases, very small hole on spine, slight darkening to edges, protected in a mylar sleeve.
