From the Author
The era of Reconstruction and the Gilded Age is the best-kept secret in American history. After the guns of the Civil War fall silent in April 1865, most readers lose interest in the American past, until perhaps the rise of Teddy Roosevelt. But the twelve years after General Lee's surrender mark a period unrivaled by any other--including the Civil War itself--in drama, power, and importance. For the first time, Americans struggled with the questions that dominate the public debate down to this day: the size and role of the federal government, political corruption and corporate power, as well as civil rights and racism. In this book, I follow the stories of a handful of people as they fought the battles that determined the nation's destiny. And those battles were astonishing: confrontations on the streets of small Southern towns, as white supremacists fought to continue slavery in all but name; ruthless wars on Wall Street, fought by unscrupulous railroad kingpins with the cash to buy judges and legislators; massively corrupt schemes, run from the White House, to control the results of elections; and the eventual rise and triumph of America's first black congressmen. Here, in their own words, are the brave men and women who fought for equal rights in the face of revolvers, lynch ropes, and public scorn; here, too, are the robber barons and political insiders who undermined their efforts; and here are the catastrophic events that crushed a brief era when civil rights were truly guaranteed regardless of race. This is the third of an on-going series I am writing, presenting American history through first-person accounts--and it is easily the most gripping, and the most important. We still live with the results of those struggles waged so long ago in the dirt roads of Mississippi and the marble halls on Capitol Hill.
