Item description from seller

First Edition, dated 1899 on title page with no additional printing history. Tightly bound in maroon cloth with gilded titles. Moderate shelf wear to binding. The contents include numerous illustrations and some B/W photographs of indigenous peoples. The paper on several hinges are split and p.15 is separated, remains Good. This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York City. A Mercantile Library bookplate is on the endpaper, a stamp and number are on the title page and some of the internal pages. There are no other indications of the library's ownership.
