First American Edition. Size: 4to. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. White blind stamped cloth over boards, illustrated endpapers, 135 pages, Bibliography, captions to the illustrations, forty-two color, sixty-eight black-and-white photographs, sixteen line drawings. In a color illustrated dust jacket that is lightly toned, very lightly bumped along top edges, top corners and head of spine. In a very good slipcase which is sunned around the perimeter. "This book covers the various languages and scripts used at different times, kinds of writing implements, subjects considered worth recording in books, book illustration, and the great finds of early books in the excavations of the 19th and 20th centuries. The transition from the papyrus roll to the codex - made first of papyrus, later parchment and finally paper - is the framework around which all these and many other aspects of the development of the book are dealt with."
