Item description from seller

The first edition of a fascinating archaeological study into a region trodden by Alexander the Great and Achaemenid rulers, profusely illustrated throughout. The first edition of Old Routes of Western Iran: Narrative of an Archaeological Journey, a fascinating study into the historic region, carried out and recorded by Hungarian-British archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein, with antiquities described and examined by British scholar Frederick Henry Andrews. In the publisher's decorative original maroon cloth. A copy belonging to Bath Public Reference Library. Contains all one-hundred and twelve photographic illustrations, all thirty-one plates of artefacts to the rear, in-text maps, as well as both folding maps, including one in colour tucked into rear pastedown. Collated complete. Being a region trodden by both Alexander the Great and the rulers of Achaemenid Persia, Western Iran was at the heart of the ancient world but is known for having surprisingly little detail recorded about it. With the book covering Stein's four journeys between 1932-1936, we are offered a wonderful portrait of both Hellenic and Persian archaeology which once riddled the region. Aurel Stein was also an important figure within the Great Game, the imperial struggle for influence in Central Asia between Britain and Russia. In the publisher's decorative original maroon cloth. A copy previously belonging to Bath Public Reference Library. Externally, mostly smart, with the light handling marks to boards and spine. Minor rubbing to joints. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. A library number to spine. End papers are mostly bright and clean, with minor age toning to extremities. Library bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. The odd library stamp to plates. Pages are bright and clean, with minor age toning to leaf extremities. Very Good.
