About this Item
VG first edition of the Official History of the Wellington Mounted Rifles. VG throughout although front hinge somewhat loose. Previous owner's details in pencil on fep. pgs 260, maps and illustrations including rear fold out map all very good. Minor tear to fabric top of front hinge (see photo). Rare official record of the war service of the Wellington Mounted Rifles from formation and departure through their role as dismounted infantry on Gallipoli, and their tough war across the Sinai and Palestine. The WMR saw much fighting and suffered many casualties. On Gallipoli they served with great distinction including during the zenith of fighting with the August battle for Chunuk Bair where they lost Major James Elmslie killed in action. Elmslie was considered by many to have shown devotion to duty worthy of a Victoria Cross. After the evacuation of Anzac the AMR served as part of the NZ Mounted Brigade in the demanding conditions of the Palestine campaign, seeing action in all the major battles fought by the NZMR through to the Jordan Valley and the conclusion of the war. The text is very well written by a senior officer of the Regiment and is extensively illustrated. The maps, particularly of the Palestine campaign, are of a very high standard and give much important detail. Very Rare Text. Seller Inventory # 91635
