1750, 1st edition. (Leatherbound) Fair. [xii, 337pp + 84pp]; [iv, 398pp]. Complete in two volumes. Short 4to (10" X 8"). Bound in full leather, raised bands on spine. Compartments tooled in gilt, title and volume compartments lettered in gilt. Binding with notable wear, extensive rubbing, leather chipped and worn. Leather chipped on spine, gilt extensively rubbed and faded, head and heel of spine chipped (vol. I with head and foot bands lacking). Corners extensively rubbed. Foot of front hinge of vol.I split. Boards remain entirely secure; binding secure, if worn. Untrimmed. EPs marbled in the striking swirl pattern renowned in 18th century French bindings. Original silk markers laid in. Engravings illus.; vol.I with two full-page engravings, including one of the author, and two vignettes; vol.II with two engraved vignettes. Vol. I hinges tender. Foot of vol.I binding reinforced with 17th-18th(?) century parchment. Extensive wear to front EPs and first blanco. Top corner of FFEP clipped. Previous owner's signature to top corner of first blanco, head of title page; marginal signature at inner margin of title page. Textblock dirtied early and late. Frontispiece engraving soiled, split at inner gutter with corresponding wrinkling. Date written in ink beneath roman numeral date on title page. Head of title page and first two leaves with small burn hole. Occasional small period marginal note in ink. Else majority of textblock proper clean. Rear blanco nearly detached. Certificate from the Societe Nationale tipped on to final page. Vol.II textblock soiled with faint dampstaining at extremity. Else textblock largely bright and clean with only occasional marginal foxing, like vol.I. With blemishes duly noted, this remains an acceptable complete set of the first edition at an accessible price.
