In 1807 he published an extended version, the Columbiad'. Barlow's religious convictions had now turned to scepticism and for that the revolutionary leader and former bishop Henri Gregoire published this open letter. Gregoire was despite his revolutionary view a devout Catholic and considered the Gospel the true fundament of a civilised society and political liberty. When public shame is extinct, do not expect to preserve the private virtues; and when religion is publicly insulted, it is a wound to morality, a national calamity .
