Item description from seller

(15 x 10 7/8 inches). Illustrated with 38 aquatint and engraved plates (several double-page or folding, 11 beautifully hand-colored). Original boards with the original blue paper labels preserved on the front board and spine Provenance: Armorial bookplate of collector and bibliographer John Roland Abbey (1894-1969) A finely illustrated first edition of Loudon's early manual for remodelling English farms and estates on Scottish agricultural principles, with hand-coloured aquatints documenting practical improvements to buildings, field systems, and the designed rural landscape. Published when Loudon was still in the agricultural and estate-improvement phase of his career, Observations on Laying Out Farms records the transfer of Berwickshire husbandry into Middlesex and Oxfordshire. The work grew out of Loudon's practical experience in Scotland and England, including his work at Tew Park, Oxfordshire, where he was engaged in 1808 by George Frederick Stratton and established a school for pupils in improved farming. Its concern is not simply crop management, but the whole visual and functional organisation of the estate: farm buildings, yards, roads, plantations, drainage, views, and the relationship between profit and ordered design. The plates include plans, elevations, views, and aquatint landscapes showing recently executed improvements, several of them double-page or folding. The hand-coloured plates give the volume the character of a colour-plate book as well as an agricultural treatise, joining practical rural planning with the visual language of the picturesque book of scenery. The title advertises forty plates, but copies are regularly described as complete with 38 plates, a discrepancy addressed in the publisher's note following the plate list. Loudon later became one of the most influential horticultural and landscape writers of the nineteenth century, publishing An Encyclopaedia of Gardening in 1822, The Encyclopaedia of Agriculture in 1825, and founding The Gardener's Magazine in 1826. This earlier work shows the practical basis of that later authority, presenting the farm as a designed environment shaped by economy, utility, architecture, and landscape. Provenance: Major John Roland Abbey was among the most important twentieth-century collectors and bibliographers of British illustrated books, particularly aquatint and lithographic colour-plate books. His catalogues of scenery, travel, and life in England helped define the modern bibliographical study of the field, and his ownership places this agricultural colour-plate book within one of the major collecting traditions for illustrated British books.…
