Second edition, printed in Leiden, includingt a new plate engraved by Noach van der Meer elder. "In this second edition of Santorini's Observationes, the text remains unchanged; the plates have been re-engraved although they are the same size as those in the first edition." (Heirs of Hippocrates 787). "At a time when the European universities were making great strides in anatomical discovery and publication, Santorini was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the greatest anatomists. This work records a number of new anatomical discoveries and corrects many errors of earlier anatomists. Santorini's skill and expertise were so outstanding that his name lives on in such anatomical structures as the accessory pancreatic ducts, risorius muscle, arytenoid cartilages, and duodenal papillae, several of which are described in this book. The text is accompanied by three folding copperplates which beautifully illustrate the musculature of the face, the pelvic musculature and genitalia of a sixteen-year-old girl with a tubal pregnancy, the external muscles of the ear, and detailed anatomy of the male genitalia and larynx." (Heirs of Hippocrates 786). "Santorini was one of the ablest dissectors of his day. In the above work many new discoveries of anatomical details are set forth, together with corrections of some of the errors of earlier anatomists. The work describes the four major discoveries for which Santorini is known eponymically: Santorini's cartilage, Santorini's vein, Santorini's duct, and Santorini's caruncula." (G/M 392). Inside very clean.
