This study examines the concept of zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, in pre-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on the Bilad al-Sudan. It explores whether and how Islamic taxation systems -such as zakat, kharaj, and jizya- were introduced in the region and how they related to the formation of Islamic states. The book also considers which pre-colonial Muslim governments may have attempted to apply Islamic law and reorganize political and fiscal systems according to an Islamic ideal. Text in English. 320 pp. Small handwritten inscription on the front endpaper.
