Item description from seller

Large octavo, publisher's original black cloth stamped in gold.1,268 copies printed. A bright, near fine copy, in both the original 1939 Arkham House dust jacket and the Gerry de la Ree facsimile jacket produced in 1974. Older ownership stamp to rear paste-down endpaper. Corner tips very (very!) slightly soft; faint browning to the endleaves at the gutters (much less than usual as this is a common issue with this book); a near fine, bright copy, text block clean and on off-white paper, gilt spine lettering very bright. The original dust jacket is complete, unclipped ($5.00 price at top edges of front flap), shows light rubbing / wear at spine tips, one short closed tear and a small snag to lower edge of rear panel, internal tape repair at head & heel of spine and all 4 flap corners. After some attempts to place the omnibus volume with major hardcover publishers without any success, the two men realized that no publisher would be willing to take a chance with the collection. Derleth and Wandrei decided to form their own company, Arkham House (its name based on a town featured in many of Lovecraft's stories) with the expressed purpose of publishing all of Lovecraft's writings in hardcover. The book collects two essays, "Howard Philips Lovecraft: Outsider", by August Derleth & Donald Wandrei and "Supernatural Horror in Literature" by Lovecraft, along with 36 short stories and novellas by HPL.…
