The attribution is from a note on a copy in the British Library, which is bound in a volume with seemingly knowledgeable annotations throughout; this poem was not, however, included in the second edition of Broome's Poems on Several Occasions, published in 1739, and the evidence of a single ascription should perhaps be regarded as insufficient. The Wrenn catalogue attributes the poem to Gay, but this is no doubt an invention of T. J. Wise, who provided many of Wrenn's books. Broome published nothing under his own name aside from the collected edition of his poems, save for two very rare sermons, one in 1707 and the other in 1723. Foxon B499. Seller Inventory # 23255
