The author's note before Genne Nelson's purported 1860 interview with California pioneer Juliet Brier (which leads off this volume) reports "The Earliest surviving interview given by Juliet Wells Brier was to the San Francisco Call, December 25, 1898, less than two months following the death of her husband, James Welsh Brier." So what is this thing? There is an extensive bibliography, presumably to document the incidents cited, but it appears this entire dialogue is "imagined." Otherwise, we find here papers -- generally of 12 to 33 pp. -- on the 1866 Blasdell Expedition, on the Panamint Boom, on Diamond Tooth Lil, Dublin Gulch, The Porter Mine, etc. 273 pp. trade paperback, reduced from $21.
