ix + 242 pages, an autobiography written at the age of 16 as he left secondary school. ". . An Autobiography" per title page; " . . . A Boy's Autobiography" per jacket. Astonishingly well written, indeed, a testament to the education of Douglas Pope after a poor though happy start in life. He was born near Bodiam in east Sussex but spent the majority of his first 16 years in Cranbrook, Kent's smallest town. Great tales of Cranbrook; its educational facilities which, in those late 1920s and 1930s days, were good; its people, society and habits - an important social document. This copy was evidently a file copy of the publishers - a label to that effect (indicating publication date as 2 Sept, 1937) on front pastedown as well as other evidence, none of it intrusive, in the first few pages. Even taking that into account, book in overall 'good' condition: covers a little discoloured in places; a minimal inclination to foxing; but a robust copy. Jacket is sunned at spine and otherwise a little marked; some wear and creasing along edges; tears at spine with a little loss at top; now poly-protected. Seller Inventory # DC156
