London: Richard Bentley, 1849. 1st ed. 2 Vols. xii, [13]-308; vii, [9]-328 pp. Orig. 3/4-vellum and marbled boards, gilt-lettered black morocco spine labels. Boards rubbed, tape repair to outer hinges of Vol. 1, else a very good copy. Sabin 43514, "Depicts with great fidelity and vivacity the manners and conditions, the toils, privations and perils of the Indian hunters. It also includes several interesting geographical and geological facts and Indian vocabularies." Field 996: "Much the largest portion is devoted to the narration of incidents of travel among the Indians of the territory." M'Lean began working for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821 and spent the next dozen years in Ontario, on the Ottawa River, at Ft. Coulonge, and at Le Chate. He later served in Labrador.
