Under his will more than 300 volumes of his literary correspondence, along with other papers, were left to the University of Edinburgh. His principal remaining Shakespearian collections, once intended for Stratford, were offered at the preferential figure of £7000 to the Birmingham corporation, who declined them; in 1897 they were finally sold to Marsden J. Perry of Providence, Rhode Island, and in 1908 passed largely to Henry Clay Folger, now remaining in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. See ODNB. Seller Inventory # 007152
