Item description from seller

Free endpapers and half-title mildly embrowned; tiny monogram stamp on front pastedown. Ernest William Hornung (1866-1921), creator of Raffles and brother-in-law of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was 48 at the outbreak of the Great War. After his son Oscar, a second lieutenant with the Essex Regiment aged 20, was killed in Flanders in July 1915, Hornung joined an anti-aircraft unit and helped troops home on leave through the YMCA, then followed the YMCA to France to serve in a canteen in Arras and establish a soldiers' lending library. His account of his time in France, 1917-18, is easy and upbeat, but with one very poignant episode, "The Boy's Grave": "I longed to see the place; the tide of battle had at last receded; at least I might see what was left of the trench where the boy had fallen, and have something to tell his mother on my return. So I had set my heart, originally, on working for the Y.M.C.A. in Flanders . . .".
