Sidorov was also a pioneering entrepreneur in Russia’s Arctic who had a vision for the development of trade along the Northern Sea Route. Along with wealthy Swedish merchant and philanthropist of Scottish origin Oskar Dickson, Sidorov sponsored voyages to the Siberian North for several years. Sidorov invested family money in the exploration of gold-bearing placers near Yeniseysk and eventually became the owner of 170 gold mines, which made the family quite wealthy. This wealth funded Sidorov's explorations of the Yenisei North and facilitated his investment in the exploration of deposits of mineral salt, coal, graphite, iron and copper ore, gold placers, and agricultural development. Over the course of 30 years (1852—1882), the enormous sum of 1.7 million roubles were spent on these projects. Sidorov traveled extensively along Kolyma and Chukotka; visiting the Lena, the Yana, the Angara, and Obdorsk (Salekhard), the Kola Peninsula. He initiated construction of the canal connecting the Ob and the Yenisei to facilitate the delivery of the Siberian riches to markets. Sidorov also endeavored to develop the Northern Sea Route.
