Item description from seller

A collection of poetry by Canadian lawyer and poet George Allan Mackenzie. This collection of poetry has an interesting connection to Canadian history, through its author's experiences in a Canadian militia in the nineteenth century. Born in Toronto, Mackenzie enlisted in a militia as a youth and with it fought at the Battle of Ridgeway in 1866. This battle was a significant event in the history of Canada in general and Ontario in particular as it was the first modern-style battle fought entirely by Canadian troops under the command exclusively of Canadian officers. In addition, it was the last battle against a foreign invader fought on Ontario soil, against Irish-American invaders as part of the Fenian Raids. These raids were part of a greater campaign executed by Irish-Americans against the British Empire in support of the formation of an independent Irish Republic. Mackenzie survived the battle, and was called to the bar in 1873. This collection was published in 1914. The poems in general are theological in nature, discussing the individual's coming to Christ and the comfort and peace found as a result. A number of the poems are particularly introspective in nature, and discuss the coming to self-awareness as part of coming to Christ. Occasional poems discuss other themes, including one dedicated to Magellan and his confirmation that the world is round, as well as meditations on parenthood. Included is a long narrative poem called "Malcolm" on a religious theme. The book overall is in good condition. There if some fading and wear to the covers, as well as stains from previous price stickers. Internally, the book is in excellent condition with no significant blemishes, and a tight binding.…
