Intended for both the traveller and the scholar, this book is the result of many years of individual research by experts on Nepal's history, religion, art and sociology. It draws on studies of the country's cultural history that have been published in both European and Nepalese languages. An overview of Nepal's history focuses on the Kathmandu Valley, but also outlines developments of historical importance elsewhere, and this is followed by a detailed introduction to religion. There are also introductory chapters on architecture, painting, stone sculpture, metal-casting and wood-carving. The second part of the book consists of detailed descriptions of specific sites within the Kathmandu Valley, each written by a scholar who has a long acquaintance with the temples, palaces, stupas and other monuments described.
